SIX TRUTHS ABOUT THE PROMISES OF GOD | Psalm 119:49-50 | Mike Prah

“Remember your word to your servant, for You have given me hope. 50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.” Psalm 119:49-50 (NIV)

    1. GOD'S PROMISES ARE REMEMBERED IN HEAVEN

“Remember your word to your servant” Psalm 119:49a (NIV)

    • The psalmist realized that God had spoken, and behind that word spoken were all the resources in Heaven. There are times when we stand in faith and call the Lord to remember.

    • This is not in any way an accusation that the Lord had forgotten; it is an act of faith in God's faithfulness. "Lord, you said this, and I am believing it. I am reminding you of what you said." This is the kind of faith that cashes the checks of Heaven and releases them into the midst of our circumstances.

    2. GOD'S PROMISES ARE GIVEN TO US ON EARTH

“Remember your word to your servant” Psalm 119:49a (NIV)

    • The Psalmist had a particular word in mind that God had given Him He says "The Word" to your servant. Notice "to your servant." He is saying this was a word given to me from you.

    • Jesus taught us to pray that the will of God would be done on Earth as it is in Heaven (Matt. 6). This is often how it works. We declare the word Heaven has given and it is honored on Earth as God moves to fulfill it in response to our faith.

    • When people respond to that word that has been given to them, then what that word promises is realized in their hearts.

    • There is a Hebrew ASAH that means that the Word of God contains the power to accomplish whatever the Word promises.

    • If it is a word of comfort, it will bring comfort.. If it is a word of healing, it will bring healing. So, it is important to pay attention to the faith that arises in our hearts. When the Spirit of God moves on our hearts upon hearing one of His promises, that is an indication that the power is present to see that promise realized.

    3. GOD'S PROMISES CAUSE US TO HOPE

“Remember your word to your servant, for You have given me hope” Psalm 119:49 (NIV)

    • God's promises of what He is going to do gives us hope in the midst of our struggles. It infuses us with the strength to keep going, to keep believing in spite of what the circumstances say.

    • Hope is a powerful heaven-sent commodity that causes our hearts to surge with the enduring courage and strength to go on.

    4. GOD'S PROMISES BRING US COMFORT

“Remember your word to your servant, for You have given me hope. 50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.” Psalm 119:49-50 (NIV)

    • God's promises also comfort us. They remind us that God has not forgotten us, that He has plans for us, that He is still doing things to bring about His ultimate purposes in our lives.

    • This causes the pain to have meaning and the loss we sometimes face to not seem so final.

    • We are comforted when we encounter hardship or loss, even when a loved one dies, knowing that God is at work in the unseen world, taking care of them.

    5. GOD'S PROMISES ARE ESPECIALLY FOR THE TOUGH TIMES

“Remember your word to your servant, for You have given me hope. 50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.” Psalm 119:49-50 (NIV)

    • The psalmist was undergoing suffering, and we will be as well. Life brings its troubles, but God brings His comfort through His promises and His Spirit.

    • This was true before the cross, how much more so now, this side of the cross. If you are afflicted today, know that today is just a snapshot in the flow of eternity in which God is working for His glory and our good. We have His promise of that (Rom. 8:28).

    6. GOD'S PROMISES REVIVE US

“Remember your word to your servant, for You have given me hope. 50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.” Psalm 119:49-50 (NIV)

    • In several places in God's Word, we are told of the life-giving quality of God's Word. Hebrews 12 teaches us God’s word quickens (makes alive).

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)

As you read the Bible, use the S.P.A.C.E.P.E.T.S. method of Bible Study below to hear from God. In the Bible passage, look for and answer these questions…

    • Sin to confess?

Do I need to ask for forgiveness from God, anyone or make any restitution?

    • Promise to claim?

Is it a universal promise or a conditional promise? Have I met the condition(s)?

    • Attitude to change?

Am I willing to work on a negative attitude and begin building toward a positive one?

    • Command to obey?

Am I willing to practice God's commands no matter how I feel?

    • Example to follow?

Is it a positive example for me to copy or a negative one to avoid?

    • Prayer to pray?

Is there anything I need to pray back to God?

    • Error to avoid?

Is there any problem that I should be alert to, or beware of?

    • Truth to believe?

What new things can I learn about God the Father, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, or the other biblical teachings?

    • Something to praise God for? Is there something here I can be thankful for?

Pray the Bible verse or passage back to God.

Put the Bible verse or passage into the first person singular, turn it into prayer, and pray it back to God.
