ATTITUDES OF A MATURE PERSON
JAMES: PRACTICAL GRACE-FILLED LIVING Series- Pt 14 of 15
Overview of James | Mike Prah

“Let us stop going over the same old ground, again and again, always teaching those first lessons about Christ. Let us go on … and become mature in our understanding, as strong Christians ought to be” Hebrews 6:1 (NLT)

                             WHAT MATURITY ISN'T: It’s not …

AGE  |  APPEARANCE  |  ACHIEVEMENT  |  ACADEMICS

God says maturity is determined by ATTITUDE

 1. A MATURE PERSON IS POSITIVE UNDER PRESSURE

“Consider it pure joy, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4 (NIV)

“God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward, they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.” James 1:12 (NLT)

 2. A MATURE PERSON IS SENSITIVE TO PEOPLE

"If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, `Love your neighbor as yourself you are doing right."  James 2:8 (NIV)

“How can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?” James 2:1-4 (NLT)

“If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels … If I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge … If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body … but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (NLT)

 3. A MATURE PERSON HAS CONTROL OVER HIS MOUTH

“All of us do many wrong things. But if you can control your tongue, you are mature and able to control your whole body.” James 3:2 (CEV)

 SELF-CONTROL COMES FROM TONGUE CONTROL

“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” Ephesians 4:29 (NLT)

“If you think you are being religious, but can’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and everything you do is useless.” James 1:26 (CEV)

“Speaking the truth with love, we will grow up in every way into Christ, who is the head.” Ephesians 4:15 (NCV)

When we tell the truth, we must have:

 T.A.M.P = Right Timing |  Attitude  |  Motive  |  Place

 4. A MATURE PERSON IS A PEACEMAKER, NOT A TROUBLEMAKER

 2 Sources of Conflict:

SELFISHNESS:

“You want something you don’t have, and you will do anything to get it … you won’t get it by fighting and arguing. You should pray for it. Yet even when you do pray, your prayers are not answered, because you pray just for selfish reasons.” James 4:2-3 (CEV)

JUDGING OTHERS:

“Don’t speak evil against each other … If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law … God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?” James 4:11-12 (NLT)

 5. A MATURE PERSON IS PATIENT AND PRAYERFUL

“Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. You, too, must be patient.” James 5:7-8 (NLT)

“Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” James 5:16 (NLT)
