THE GOD OF THE TURNAROUND

HOW TO RECOVER FROM A FAILURE

Luke 5:1-11

"Your road led through ... the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was there!" Psalm 77:19 (NLT)

 “Jesus replied, “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.” John 13:7 (NLT)

 “Your troubles will go away like water beneath a bridge, and your darkest night will be brighter than noon. You will rest safe and secure, filled with hope and emptied of worry.” Job 11:16-18 CEV

 “(Jesus) included everyone in His death so that everyone could also be included in His life, a resurrection life, a far BETTER LIFE than people ever lived on their own.” 2 Corinthians 5:15 (MSG)

 “No matter how often honest people fall, they always get up again” Proverbs 24:16, GN)

 1. TURN EVERYTHING COMPLETELY TO JESUS

 “He [Jesus] got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”  Luke 5:3–4 (NIV)

Whatever I want God to bless, I must give it to Him.

 “More than anything else, put God’s work first and do what He wants. Then the other things will be yours as well” Matthew 6:33 (CEV).

 2. ADMIT THAT MY OWN EFFORTS HAVE FAILED

 “Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything’” Luke 5:5a (NIV)

 Common Reasons Why We Fail and Don’t Recover

•  PRIDE

“Too much pride will destroy you. A proud attitude brings ruin”  Proverbs 16:18 (CEV+NCV)

•  DISOBEDIENCE

“You will be cursed if you disobey the commands of the Lord your God.” Deuteronomy 11:28 (GWT)

•  DOUBT

“The one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord” James 1:6b-7 (NIV)

•  DISCOURAGEMENT

“We will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t get discouraged and give up” Galatians 6:9 (LB)

 To recover from a failure, I have to humble myself. God does not recover prideful people.

 “You will never succeed in life if you try to hide your sins. Confess them and give them up; then God will show mercy to you” (Proverbs 28:13, GNT).

 3. OBEY WHATEVER JESUS TELLS ME TO DO

 “When He [Jesus] had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” Luke 5:4–5 (NIV)

 To succeed where I’ve failed, I need to demonstrate unquestioned obedience.

 4. EXPECT JESUS TO TURN THINGS AROUND

 “When the fishermen did as Jesus told them, they caught so many fish that the nets began to break. They called to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats so full that they were almost sinking” Luke 5:6–7 (NCV)

 “When the men brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed Jesus” Luke 5:11 (NCV)

 I have to be more interested in following God, the Blessor, than having the blessing.

 “You will not succeed by your own strength or by your own power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord All-Powerful” Zechariah 4:6 (NCV)
