John 16:1-15

“Very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16:7 (NIV)

BIG IDEA: Jesus never promised His followers an easy journey, but He promised they would never walk it alone. Through the Holy Spirit, He has given every believer everything we need for life's journey—to remain faithful, overcome opposition, grow in truth, and fulfill our God-given mission.

1. THE HOLY SPIRIT  US TO STAND FIRM WHEN LIFE BECOMES DIFFICULT

"All this I have told you so that you will not fall away." John 16:1 (NIV)

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first … If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also …” John 15:18, 20 (NIV)

"They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God." John 16:2 (NIV)

"Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you." 1 Peter 4:12 (NIV)

"I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you." John 16:4 (NIV)

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will

have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33 (NIV)

Takeaway (Point 1): Our confidence is not found in the absence of trouble but in the presence of Jesus, who is with us and has overcome the world.

2. THE HOLY SPIRIT   US TO LIVE VICTORIOUSLY

"When He comes, He will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment." John 16:8 (NIV)

I. The Holy Spirit Exposes the Root of Sin

“When He comes, He will prove the world to be in the wrong … about sin, because people do not believe in Me” John 16:8-9 (NIV)

"See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God." Hebrews 3:12 (NIV)

II. The Holy Spirit Reveals God’s True Righteousness

"When He comes, He will prove the world about ... righteousness, because I am going to the Father…." John 16:8,10 (NIV)

"Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness." Romans 10:3 (NIV)

III. The Holy Spirit Assures Us of Satan’s Defeat

"When He comes, He will prove the world … about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned." John 16:8, 11 (NIV)

"Having disarmed the powers and authorities, Christ made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." Colossians 2:15 (NIV)

Takeaway (Point 2): The Holy Spirit turns our eyes from ourselves to Jesus—exposing the root of our sin, revealing God's righteousness in Christ, and assuring us that, through Christ, we already stand on the side of victory.

3. THE HOLY SPIRIT   US TO LIVE CHRIST-CENTERED LIVES

"When He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth." John 16:13 (NIV)

"The Advocate, the Holy Spirit...will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." John 14:26 (NIV)

Takeaway (Point 3): The Holy Spirit faithfully guides us into God's truth, continually points us to Jesus, and transforms us to become more like Him.
