HOW TO HANDLE MONEY WISELY (Pt2)
JAMES: PRACTICAL GRACE-FILLED LIVING Series- Pt 12 of 15
James 4:17-5:8 | Mike Prah | August 21, 2022

“If anyone, then, knows the GOOD THEY OUGHT TO DO and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. 3 Now listen, you rich people … You have hoarded wealth in these last days. 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers … are crying out against you. The cries … have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves …  6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you … [Remember] the Lord’s coming is near.” James 4:17-5:8 (NIV)

HOW TO MAKE, SAVE & USE WEALTH WISELY

1. IN ACCUMULATING WEALTH, DON’T HOARD IT FOOLISHLY, INSTEAD SAVE IT WISELY

You’ve hoarded wealth in these last days.”  James 5:3b (NIV)

  • MONEY IS A TOOL TO BE USED, NOT A THING TO BE HOARDED

“The wise person saves for the future, but the foolish person spends whatever they get.”  Proverbs 21:20 (LB)

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with whatever you have, because God has said, ‘I will NEVER leave you and I will NEVER abandon you!’” Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)

3 BIBLICAL REASONS FOR SAVING

 I. I SAVE TO PRACTICE SELF-CONTROL

“The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets.”  Proverbs 21:20 (LB)

II. SAVE TO GET MONEY TO WORK FOR ME

Invest what you have, because after a while, you'll get a return." Ecclesiastes 11:1 (NCV)

“The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’ “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.” Matthew 25:20-21 (NIV)

“Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master … I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. …  “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant!  … you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest” Matthew 25:24-27(NIV)

III. I SAVE TO BE ABLE TO GIVE TO HELP OTHERS

“Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to give to people in need.” Ephesians 4:28 (NIV+CEV)

“Right now you have plenty and can help others; then at some other time, they can share with you when you need it. In this way, each will have as much as he needs.” 2 Corinthians 8:14 (LB)

 2. IN ALLOCATING WEALTH, DON’T WASTE IT SELFISHLY

“While here on earth, you have thought only of filling your own stomachs and having a good time … “James 5:5 (CEV)

“A pretentious, showy life is an empty life; a plain and simple life is a full life.”  Proverbs 13:7 (MSG)

“You have condemned and ruined innocent people in your career, and they have been powerless to stop you.” James 5:6 (PH)

INSTEAD OF WASTING WEALTH SELFISHLY, SHARE IT GENEROUSLY

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So, if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” Luke 16:10-11 (NIV)

It is possible to give freely and become more wealthy, but those who are stingy will lose everything.”  Proverbs 11:24 (NLT)

“The generous person will prosper, and whoever refreshes others will himself be refreshed.”  Proverbs 11:25 (NIV)

When the Lord blesses you with riches, you have nothing to regret.”  Proverbs 10:22 (CEV)
