HOW TO PREPARE FOR CHRIST'S COMING
JAMES: PRACTICAL GRACE-FILLED LIVING Series- Pt 16
James Overview | Mike Prah | September 18, 2022

“Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming.”  James 5:7 (NIV)

“Do not give up hope, because the Lord is coming soon.”  James 5:8 (NCV)

“Speak and act as those who are going to be judged.”  James 2:12 (NIV)

“The Judge is near, ready to appear.”  James 5:9 (GNT)

WHAT WILL THE LAST DAYS BE LIKE?

Jesus: “There will be GREAT DISTRESS (in the world), unequaled from the beginning of the world” Matthew 24:21 (NIV)

 Jesus’ description | Matthew 24:7-14

Paul’s description | 2 Timothy 3:1-5

Peter’s description | 2 Peter 3:3, 10-13

“There will be famines and earthquakes. 8 All these things are like the first pains of childbirth You will be arrested and handed over to be punished and be put to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. 10 Many will give up their faith at that time; they will betray one another and hate one another. 11 Many false prophets will appear and fool many people. 12 Such will be the spread of evil that many people's love will grow cold. 13 But whoever holds out to the end will be saved. 14 And this Good News about the Kingdom will be preached through all the world for a witness to all people; and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:7-14 (GN)

“There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NIV/NLT)

“In the last days, scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires.” 2 Peter 3:3 (NLT)

“The day of the Lord will come like a thief … Since everything will be destroyed, what kind of people ought you to be?” 2 Peter 3:10-11a (NIV)

“You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming” 2 Peter 3:11b-12 (NIV)

“We are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth Jesus has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness— where there will be only goodness” 2 Peter 3:13 (NLT/LB)

Jesus: “The Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:14 (NLT)

HOW SHOULD I LIVE TO PREPARE FOR CHRIST’S COMING?

 1. CLEAN OUT THE GARBAGE IN MY LIFE

Human anger does not achieve God's righteous purpose. So get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the Word that He plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.” James 1:20-21 (GN)

“Christ is your life, and when He comes again, you will share in His glory! So put all evil things out of your life: sexual sinning, doing evil, letting evil thoughts control you, wanting things that are evil, and greed. This is really serving a false god. These things make God angry. In your past, evil life you also did these things. But now also put these things out of your life: anger, bad temper, doing or saying things to hurt others, and using evil words when you talk.” Colossians 3:4-8 (NCV)

 2. STAY COMPLETELY CONNECTED TO CHRIST

“… The Spirit that God gave to live in us wants us for Himself alone. So, give yourself completely to God... Draw close to God, and He will draw close to you!”  James 4:5,7-8 (NCV)

“Continue to live in fellowship with Christ so that when He returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from Him in shame.” 1 John 2:28 (NLT)

“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. All who have this hope in Him purify themselves, just as He is pure.” 1 John 3:2-3 (NIV)

 3. USE TROUBLE TO BECOME SPIRITUALLY STRONG

“You know that these troubles test your faith, and this will give your endurance a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything.” James 1:3-4 (NCV/LB)

“May God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put together – spirit, soul, and body – and KEEP YOU FIT for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ.”  1 Thessalonians 5:23 (MSG)

 THE REWARD:

Jesus: “Blessings on you if I return and find you faithfully doing your work. I will put such faithful ones in charge of everything I own!” Matthew 24:46-47 (LB)
