LESSONS FROM JONAH ABOUT MY LIFE MISSION – Pt 1

Jonah 1:1-17

JONAH: The Fulfillment of My Life Mission series – Part 1

Mike Prah – June 6, 2021

"We are God's masterpiece created anew in Christ Jesus to do good works, He has planned for us long ago" (Eph. 2:10 NLT).

Jesus: “In the same way that you [the Father] gave me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world.’ John 17:18 (MSG)

"Life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus. The most important thing is that I complete my mission, the work that the Lord Jesus gave me” Acts 20:24 (LB+NCV)

1. MY LIFE MISSION WILL COME FROM GOD’S WORD

“The LORD spoke his Word to Jonah, the son of Amittai.”  Jonah 1:1 (GW)

2.  MY LIFE MISSION WILL REQUIRE A STEP OF FAITH

“Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh...”  Jonah 1:2a (NLT)

3. MY LIFE MISSION WILL SOMEHOW HELP OTHERS

“… announce to the people that I can no longer overlook the wicked things they have done.” Jonah 1:2b (NLT/GN)

“You are a God of forgiveness, gracious and merciful, slow to become angry, and rich in unfailing love. You did not abandon them [in their sin]” Nehemiah 9:17 (NLT)

“[God] is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)

 4. MY LIFE MISSION IS SO BIG, IT MAY SCARE ME AT FIRST

“But Jonah ran away from the Lord.”  Jonah 1:3a (NIV)

“I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night, but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you.” Psalm 139:7-12 (NLT)

 5.  RUNNING FROM MY MISSION CAUSES BAD CONSEQUENCES ...

 1) IF I RUN FROM GOD MY LIFE WILL GO DOWNHILL

He went DOWN to the city of Joppa, where he found a ship that was going to the opposite direction, the city of Tarshish. Jonah paid for the trip and went DOWN below the deck, aboard, planning to go to run away from the Lord.” Jonah 1:3b (NKJV/NLT/NCV)

“Jonah had gone DOWN into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain DOWN, and was fast asleep” Jonah 1:5 (NKJV)

(later) “I sank down, down into the deep sea!”  Jonah 2:3 (NCV)

“I was as far down as a body can go!”  Jonah 2:6 (MSG)

2)  IF I RUN FROM GOD, IT WILL COST ME

He paid the price to sail to Tarshish.”  Jonah 1:3b

 3)  IF I RUN FROM GOD, GOD WILL OPPOSE ME

“The LORD sent a violent wind over the sea ....” Jonah 1:4a

 4)  IF I RUN FROM GOD, OTHER PEOPLE GET HURT TOO

“The storm was so powerful that the ship was in danger of breaking up.” Jonah 1:4b (GW)

“Fearing for their lives, the desperate sailors shouted to their gods for help and threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship. Now, Jonah had gone below deck and was lying there sound asleep.” Jonah 1:5 (NLT/GW)

“The captain of the ship went to him and asked, “How can you sleep? Get up, and pray to your God. Maybe he will notice us, and we won’t die.” Jonah 1:6 (GW)

“What have you done,” they asked, “to bring this awful storm upon us? Jonah 1:8a (LB)

“You God [will] welcome us with open arms when we run for cover to you. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. For you bless the godly, O Lord; you surround them with your shield of love” Psalm 5:11-12 (MSG+NLT)
